Annual Wellness Visits

Labor First understands that a healthy retirement is a happy retirement. That is why we offer our members free Annual Wellness Visits (AWVs). These visits are designed to prevent hospitalization, identify gaps in care, and promote healthy lifestyles. AWVs save beneficiaries money by avoiding copayments and coinsurance associated with medical treatment and hospitalization. They also save health funds money by promoting a healthier retiree population.

An Annual Wellness Visit differs from a traditional physical exam in that it is much more comprehensive and informative. Most medical care focuses on treating acute and chronic illnesses, while an AWV aims to prevent the onset of disease and disability.

The Annual Wellness Visit promotes a comprehensive discussion of overall health, medical history, and lifestyle issues. A member has the option to partake in some or all of the following:

  • A comprehensive initial health risk assessment
  • A review of individual and family medical history
  • A list of current healthcare providers and prescribed medications
  • Height, weight, blood pressure, and other routine measurements
  • Various screenings recommended by Medicare, such as assessments for balance, mental fatigue, dementia, glaucoma, cardiac and nervous system health, and hereditary cancer screenings
  • Personalized health advice
  • A list of risk factors and treatment options
  • A screening schedule for appropriate preventive services

Each participant receives a 5-10 year personalized prevention plan at the conclusion of the Annual Wellness Visit. If needed, a referral for indicated preventive screenings or additional tests is provided. Wellness reports can also be mailed to the member’s family physician.

Annual Wellness Visits are available once every 12 months at no cost to members or health funds – covered 100% by Medicare.
