Is it harder to lose weight when you’re older? The answer may be an unfortunate “yes,” but “harder” does not mean “impossible.”

Declining levels of estrogen and testosterone in women and men over 50 is one physiological reason weight loss is harder for older people. Also, the resulting loss of muscle mass can mean more body fat in its place. Muscle uses up more calories than fat.

Experts now recommend weight training as part of a comprehensive fitness routine that also includes cardiovascular exercise (the heart is a muscular organ).
