October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. There are many positive results from years of research and advocacy on breast cancer. Today, mammography is utilized around the world as the most common type of breast cancer screening.
The American Cancer Society recommends that women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year, and “women age 55 and older should switch to mammograms every 2 years, or have the choice to continue yearly screening.” For women 65 and older, Medicare covers a screening mammogram once every 12 months.
A mammogram is not a perfect test, but experts say that the benefits outweigh any possible shortcomings.
